Novel Seafaring Adventure and Mystery
From Victor Baker of Orlando, Florida on 10/23/2021 .
This being my 1st Lamplighter Non-Audio Story Book purchase, I have to say I was impressed. The reading was enjoyable, informative, and well-paced, with lots of good vocabulary challenges. I very much appreciate the preserved originality of the Negro's and sailor's dialect and diction. The interwoven Scripture references are well placed as the story unfolds. I also liked the added background information on the Huguenots. A mix of pirates, preachers, damsels and noblemen faced with alienation, secrets, perils, and redemptive character development. Well worth the read.
One of My All-Time Favorites!
From Malachi Cyr of Buckeye, Arizona on 9/13/2021 .
My mom originally read this book aloud to us kids, and then I reread it again recently, and loved it both times. It is one of those books that is amazing and new and fresh every time you read it, and as you go you suddenly start to remember what is going to happen and you can feel goosebumps standing up on your neck because something was just foreshadowed or you realized something you didn't before. Because it is one of those books that covers all my favorite genres in one (action/adventure, mystery, [some] romance, and historical fiction) I have to place it as one of my favorites of all time. It also is long, giving time for lots of plot threads and character development. I liked all the characters, even the bad guys were well done, the plot was thicker than mashed potatoes, the characters Christian faith actually effected them (I loved Winter's interaction with the pastor), and overall awesome. I think my favorite characters had to be Winters and the pirate guy whose name I forget. Also the real life history that goes on with the man in the iron mask is pretty fascinating! This book is most definitely a good read for anyone who likes more classical literature. As I recall there were some intense scenes, so I would recommend it for 12+
I Gave it a 4 Out of 5 Stars
From Gary Johnson of Stillwater, Minnesota on 4/8/2020 .
My first book through Lamplighter and it was a winner. Excellent storyline that kept you on edge. A historical novel I guess of sorts. I would definitely recommend this read.
Grand Adventure!
From Anonymous of Wiggins, Mississippi on 1/11/2020 .
This is an awesome story. Once I got into it a chapter or two, I could hardly put it down! I want to read it again so I can soak in all the little parts that I might have overlooked in the grand drama of the whole story. The story is a grand adventure and mystery! As Dr Mark Hamby states in the Preface, “this story will captivate you from beginning to end.” I wholeheartedly agree! Order this book! You will not regret it!
Best! Lamplighter! Book!
From Melonie Luck of Morehouse, New York on 10/1/2018 .
I started reading this book on my own, but only a few chapters in I decided I needed to read it aloud to my children (ages 18, 11 & 10). But I just had to keep reading on my own! Just about every chapter ends on a cliffhanger and you just can't put it down! It has everything you could want in a book - mystery, drama, romance, adventure, pirates, and suspense along with the character building qualities you expect to find in a Lamplighter book. I especially love the little nuggets I've gleaned within these pages. For instance when the Huguenot pastor says "Why bemoan a sleepless night? ...better to be in communion with the heavenly Father than in an unconscious state..." Love that! This is one book we're proud to own (we will read it again and again!) and highly recommend to anyone - lovers of books or no! This would make a great movie!
